Chinese Journal of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (CJPRS) is China's first English-language journal for the mega-specialty of plastic surgery. During its one-year trial period, the journal has provided excellent reference to specialists who utilize or have interest in principles and techniques of plastic surgery. Its official publication marks a new era for exchange and cooperation between Chinese plastic surgeons and their international peers.

In China, plastic surgery has a history of nearly 90 years. Early records about modern plastic surgeons can be traced back to the 1930s. As in western countries, plastic surgery as a specialty made a leap forward during World War II. From 1949 to 1961, four major plastic surgery centers were born to fulfil the increased patient demands. In the 1980s and 1990s when international exchange became active, new subspecialties, predominantly microsurgery and craniofacial surgery, arose to extend the boundaries of plastic surgery.

The past decades of the 21th century have witnessed exponential expansion of plastic surgery in China. With upturn in economy, patients are more eager than ever to improvetheir self-image. In Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital alone, plastic surgeons have performed over 110 000 procedures per year. Meanwhile, the introduction of new concepts, such as regenerative medicine and digital technology, has posed great challenges. To fosterinnovation, it would be necessary to found a broad-scope, global-vision journal. The mission of CJPRS is to elevate practice and science of reconstructive and aesthetic plastic surgery. The articles will cover not only diagnosis and management of common diseases, but also researches on clinical and basic sciences. In particular, a distinct focus will be placed on probing and analyzing the impacts of ethnic and cultural differences on disease spectrum and related issues.A Chinese motto goes, "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step." We are now making the first step, and looking forward to support from peers in China and around the world.
